With the current fuel crisis filling a car with petrol right now can cost about $150, but it is about 20 cents to charge an e-bike. The latest evolution of Auckland’s city centre is here, with completion of the first stage of the Wellesley Street Bus Improvements project. With thousands of people expected to use Te Waihorotiu Station daily when City Rail Link (CRL) opens, Wellesley Street is set to become a key transport hub, and new gateway to the city, connecting high-frequency buses, trains, and walking and cycling routes.

The Auckland Transport Board has appointed Stacey van der Putten as its interim chief executive. Stacey begins in her new role on 1 May 2026, for an 18-month period. This includes the six-month transition period as signalled by legislative change, and as the establishment chief executive for the new transport CCO following transition.

Auckland has finalised and signed its city deal with the government, including a promise to consider a bed tax. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown signed the arrangement, the first of its kind in New Zealand, on 10th April. According to new research from the University of Auckland, cycling or walking to work will reduce your risk of several types of cancer. Published in the International Journal of Epidemiology , the study found cycling to work wa s linked to a lower risk of colon cancer (28%), kidney cancer (40%) and stomach cancer (73%). Walking to work was also associated with reduced risks of kidney cancer (33%) and liver cancer (45%).

Progress on this amazing new public park continues. Enabling works are progressing to safely manage soil contamination and protect the surrounding harbour environment. These works help control water runoff and prevent contamination seeping into the harbour by sealing the contaminated soil and improving how water is collected, treated and managed across the site.

Over 4,600 staff took part in the annual Wynyard Quarter commuter survey. The top modes were bus 39%, & driving alone 20%. The number of people using public transport use has increased and the average e-bike journey is 8.6km. Over 1,000 commuters wanted more information on City Rail Link.

When you factor in fuel, depreciation, tyres, servicing, insurance, rego and fuel etc. some estimates say it costs around $12,000 per year to own and run a car. That works out at around $33 per day. That figure was based on 91 petrol at $2.69 per litre (12,00kms pa). Now at $3.20 per litre the total cost of fuel has shifted from $2,744 pa to $3,264 pa .

A new carpooling app is being launched and it could help save Wynyard Quarter commuters save money. It is completely free to use and could make your commute easier and cheaper. You could carpool with not only your work colleagues but other workers in Wynyard Quarter.
