With the current bridge 67 years old a Government announcement on a second harbour crossing is expected soon. RNZ reports that carpooling is gathering momentum as commuters battle with rising fuel costs. Auckland-based entrepreneur Saveun Man's new app, Carpoolin, has seen the highest number of registered users this month. Users can chose how to split the costs of fuel and parking - but Carpoolin founder notes - "there is a legal definition and regulation for carpooling that users need to be aware of.

There is speculation around when CRL will open - some saying it might be as early as August or September. The Spinoff takes a look at who's saying what. They have ruled out October and November AT have rules out July so the bets are on for August or September.

When the CRL opens it introduces three new lines – East West, South City and Onehunga West. Travel across the City becomes easier, more direct, and more convenient, with more one‑seat journeys and easier connections to frequent bus routes. The services at the start will be slightly less than the full plan - but trains will run every 4-5 minutes at peak times. Over time the service frequencies will increase. See full details below.

In early May, Parliament passed the Local Government (Auckland Council) (Transport Governance) Amendment Act 2026. This means Auckland Transport will solely focus on the delivery of public transport services. Transport governance and planning arrangements will move to Auckland Council. A new Auckland Regional Transport Committee will be set up jointly governed by Auckland Council and central government. Read more from Auckland Council here

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said yesterday the Government intends to announce its preferred route and method for the proposed crossing next month after feasibility studies and geotechnical investigations. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says the proposal to construct a second harbour crossing near the existing bridge "makes no sense" and contradicts his city vision.

Committee for Auckland recently held a transport summit. They have recently released a new report ‘Transporting Auckland Forward: A Call to Action’, developed in partnership with Infrastructure NZ. The report reflects a shared view, setting out clear priorities including making better use of existing infrastructure, progressing key rapid transit corridors, and better aligning growth with transport investment. With the current fuel crisis filling a car with petrol right now can cost about $150, but it is about 20 cents to charge an e-bike. For a growing number of Aucklanders, that price difference is pushing people towards e-bikes. According to its founder E-bike store Electrify NZ’s have doubled sales since the energy crisis started. The latest evolution of Auckland’s city centre is here, with completion of the first stage of the Wellesley Street Bus Improvements project. With thousands of people expected to use Te Waihorotiu Station daily when City Rail Link (CRL) opens, Wellesley Street is set to become a key transport hub, and new gateway to the city, connecting high-frequency buses, trains, and walking and cycling routes.

The Auckland Transport Board has appointed Stacey van der Putten as its interim chief executive. Stacey begins in her new role on 1 May 2026, for an 18-month period. This includes the six-month transition period as signalled by legislative change, and as the establishment chief executive for the new transport CCO following transition.

Auckland has finalised and signed its city deal with the government, including a promise to consider a bed tax. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown signed the arrangement, the first of its kind in New Zealand, on 10th April. The plan promised long-term strategic planning around transport, infrastructure and innovation, and the possibility of additional Crown funding for "mutually agreed, high-priority" projects.
