According to new research from the University of Auckland, cycling or walking to work will reduce your risk of several types of cancer. Published in the International Journal of Epidemiology , the study found cycling to work wa s linked to a lower risk of colon cancer (28%), kidney cancer (40%) and stomach cancer (73%). Walking to work was also associated with reduced risks of kidney cancer (33%) and liver cancer (45%).

Progress on this amazing new public park continues. Enabling works are progressing to safely manage soil contamination and protect the surrounding harbour environment. These works help control water runoff and prevent contamination seeping into the harbour by sealing the contaminated soil and improving how water is collected, treated and managed across the site.

Over 4,600 staff took part in the annual Wynyard Quarter commuter survey. The top modes were bus 39%, & driving alone 20%. The number of people using public transport use has increased and the average e-bike journey is 8.6km. Over 1,000 commuters wanted more information on City Rail Link.

When you factor in fuel, depreciation, tyres, servicing, insurance, rego and fuel etc. some estimates say it costs around $12,000 per year to own and run a car. That works out at around $33 per day. That figure was based on 91 petrol at $2.69 per litre (12,00kms pa). Now at $3.20 per litre the total cost of fuel has shifted from $2,744 pa to $3,264 pa .

If you want to reduce commuting costs then switching to cycling has never made more financial sense. A new carpooling app is being launched and it could help save Wynyard Quarter commuters save money. It is completely free to use and could make your commute easier and cheaper. You could carpool with not only your work colleagues but other workers in Wynyard Quarter.

Air New Zealand have recently introduced Extraordinary and Workride. David saved 40% off his new e-bike plus got back 46 minutes a day by cycling to work - time he now spends with his family. The government is seeking advice on whether to bring in a toll on the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge, to help pay for a second Waitematā Harbour crossing. A $9 has been mooted.
