Labour promises $20 per week fare cap
The Labour Party has pledged to cap public transport fares at $20 per week starting from July 2027. Any rides taken after the $20 threshold would be free. Not all PT is covered - for example ferries to Waiheke Island would be excluded, but ferries operating Auckland harbour would be covered. For now Auckland HOP card users can benefit from the $50 fare cap offered by AT.

City’s first electric-hybrid ferry has arrived
Auckland’s first plug-in electric-hybrid fast ferry is one step closer to entering service. Owned by AT and operated by Fullers360, the electric-hybrid ferry is the part of a bigger plan to reduce emissions from public transport. Plans have been submitted under the new fast track legislation for a new 23 storey development at 188 Beaumont Street. The project will involve a residential-led mixed use building comprising 210 residential apartments and ground floor retail. CRL timetable announcements - what can we expect
When the CRL opens it introduces three new lines – East West, South City and Onehunga West. Travel across the City becomes easier, more direct, and more convenient, with more one‑seat journeys and easier connections to frequent bus routes. Transport reform for Auckland underway
In early May, Parliament passed the Local Government (Auckland Council) (Transport Governance) Amendment Act 2026. This means Auckland Transport will solely focus on the delivery of public transport services. Transport governance and planning arrangements will move to Auckland Council. Second Harbour Crossing announcement due in June
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said yesterday the Government intends to announce its preferred route and method for the proposed crossing next month after feasibility studies and geotechnical investigations. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says the proposal to construct a second harbour crossing near the existing bridge "makes no sense" and contradicts his city vision.
